Roland RD-700NX Stage Piano Review

Roland has always been known for producing quality keyboards and electric pianos – quality sound as well as construction. Some of the earlier models have had some complaints about the keys (see below for details) but Roland have dealt with these issues.

roland RD700NX

The Roland RD-700NX is a great looking piano with realistic sounds and feel. In this review I have included a helpful video that I found on YouTube demonstrating it and you can see for yourself what a lovely system it is. I particularly like the display.

Main Product Features of the Roland RD-700NX

  • large high resolution LCD display (watch the video below to see how clear and detailed it is) – has a piano designer feature too
  • keys that feel like real ivory – using Rolands PHA III Ivory Feel with escapement – this means that they don’t slip when you play and you experience a professional touch
  • complete touch sensitivity – the harder your action the louder the tone so you have complete control over dynamics and expression
  • access to 30 SuperNATURAL sounds (Roland technology for producing realistic digital sounds) and also including a variety of electronic piano sounds using the same technology
  • sound focus technology – you can adjust sound levels to ensure all note are heard (even during a performance)
  • easy audio recording available at a press of a button with memory space for 100 live sets (you can combine any or all
  •  effects)

Ivory Feel Issues

Having read through some threads at a few piano forums it seems that there was a concern that the Ivory Feel keys didn’t wear very well – they got dirty easily and scratched. It seems that this has been changed and is not the case any more with any of these instruments and certainly not with the Roland RD-700NX which is good news.

Tips for keeping keys clean

Never use alcohol based products

Soap and water will keep keys smooth

Also the keybed is nicely ‘cushioned’ so you don’t get any nasty noise as you hit the keys.

Here is the video I found. I love the music tones and just look at the keys – quality.

Customer Review Pros

  • notes fade naturally
  • can create you own piano voices
  • keys feel like an acoustic piano and are solid and durable
  • keys respond quickly
  • digital display is really big and easy to see

Customer Review Cons

I couldn’t find any negative reviews about the Roland RD-700NX which is quite amazing. If I do come across something then I shall update this – if you have anything to add then please leave a comment.

I have a Roland X8. RD700Gx and RD700Nx. The Nx was purchased early in 2011. I’ve never had any issues with key wear with the X8. The Gx white keys required a replacement, which Roland did for free. The Nx white keys are also wearing quite badly after around 600 hours of playing, although I expect that Roland will also replace these under warrantee. I have not been playing the Gx enough to notice any wear on the replacement keys, but they look exactly the same as the Nx, so I expect they may wear over time. Hope Roland will keep honoring its keyboards! They have got to address this problem, or I will look elsewhere next purchase. Otherwise the Nx is a great keyboard. The Gx has a bit of a heavier feel, but I like the feel of it a bit better, it’s more solid in some respects on the downstroke.

Thanks for giving such a detailed comment about your Rolands. Its good to hear that Roland are providing great customer service. However it seems that there is an issue they need to address regarding the wear on keys.
